Dental veneers: an aesthetic treatment in Geneva

By restoring the visible part of a tooth and improving its shade and shape, dental veneers can sometimes be an alternative to a crown. How do I get dental veneers? What are the advantages and disadvantages? Here's all the information you need to know before making an appointment.

Cosmetic dental care in Geneva

Improving your smile means changing your overall facial expression. This is important for everyone and at any age. The smile is an emotional bridge between the face that smiles and the face that receives it.

Today, people no longer visit their dentist only to treat pain or for an annual check-up. Aesthetic appearance is also important. Stained or yellowed, misaligned or damaged teeth have an impact on the appearance of the smile and, consequently, the face.

Dental aesthetics has become a specialty in its own right. All patients wishing to undergo aesthetic dental treatment in Geneva must first undergo a dental check-up to confirm that there are no contraindications: caries, periodontal disease, pregnancy, devitalized teeth or gingival irritation. Once this stage has been completed, specialist dentists can offer you tailor-made treatments.

Dental veneers in Geneva: all you need to know

What are dental veneers?

Developed in the late 1980s, this technique gained in popularity from the 2000s onwards due to advances in the materials and processes used. Veneers are used to correct the colour of teeth when bleaching is no longer sufficient. They can also be used to correct the shape of teeth (worn, broken, too short, etc.) and slight misalignments (small overlaps, inter-dental spaces, etc.). Veneers in cosmetic dentistry are made up of thin ceramic films that are placed on the front of a tooth to restore a smile.

How are dental veneers applied?

The first step in placing your dental veneers is to take impressions of your teeth. Usually, the dental specialist uses a metal tray filled with some kind of paste and leaves it in your mouth for about five minutes. Then he or she removes the tray from your mouth. The marks of your teeth are now moulded in the paste.

However, some state-of-the-art dental practices now offer more accurate digital impressions. Digital impressions of your teeth can be used to create a temporary set of veneers to wear while your permanent ceramic veneers are being made. They can also be used to create a photo simulation of what your new smile will look like.

The second step is to choose the exact shade of white that best matches the shade of your teeth. The dentist will advise you on the shade that best suits your smile. To prepare your tooth for the veneer, the front of your tooth will be roughened so that the cement will adhere better.

The dentist may take additional impressions once the tooth surface has been prepared. Cement will be applied to both the back of the veneer and the front of your tooth.

The final step is the final sealing of the veneers. The dentist will use a dental resin to permanently bond the veneers to the surface of your teeth in a single operation using a positioning tray. Finally, your specialist dentist will remove the excess cement from your teeth and gums.

The benefits of dental veneers

Dental veneers offer an aesthetic and functional restoration that's less damaging than a traditional crown. It's an aesthetic solution that resists food stains. It's also a good alternative to orthodontics and tooth whitening.

In addition, the ceramic of which they are composed does not change colour over time. The whiteness of your teeth is therefore permanent, which is not the case with other whitening techniques. Veneers can therefore correct :

  •   Teeth stained by tobacco, coffee, tea.
  •   White spots due to excess fluoride.
  •   Brown or browning spots due to the use of certain antibiotics.
  •   Dull, grey teeth, a natural phenomenon generally due to aging.
  •   Tooth and gum wear and tooth mobility

However, this treatment is not always feasible, depending on the height of the teeth, the severity of the defects to be corrected, the type of occlusion, the presence of parafunctions (such as bruxism for example).

How many appointments are needed?

In general, two appointments of 4 to 5 hours each for a cosmetic treatment are necessary, in case of 8 to 10 visible teeth. The number of teeth that will be treated depends on the width of your smile (count the number of teeth visible when you smile).

In particular, porcelain veneers are the aesthetic treatment of choice because porcelain does not stain and is more resistant to wear than your tooth enamel
